and Trunk Shows
This is a listing of classes, lectures and trunk shows that I offer. Classes are three to six hours in length or some work great for two days or twelve hours or more of instruction. I host a Quilt Retreat Getaway Weekend each fall and many of the classes are perfect for a weekend project.
My lectures, trunk shows and keynote addresses are approximately one hour in length. They may be shortened or lengthened by request. I always welcome questions from the group during lectures and in small groups. For large groups, I make myself available for questions, if possible, after the presentation.
If your group is interested in something I don’t offer, please ask. I may have done it or will gladly workup a custom workshop or lecture for you.
I specialize in my own hand dyed fabrics. Many of my classes and lectures feature my own fabrics. If your group allows, I would like to bring my hand dyed fabrics with me to sell after the presentation or in a booth at your show.
Class: "String Quilts"
Pictures above is a String Quilt made
by me using scraps of my hand dyed fabrics.
It is called a "Spider Web" quilt.
String quilts were one of the first documented types of quilts made as they used up all the small left over pieces of clothing and fabric scraps of the times. For today's classes, we take your left over cotton scraps and assemble them into modern, stunning quilts. No two quilts ever look alike. I have samples of some of my string quilts, both super easy and a little more complicated.
For class each student has a number of different options for their quilt. They may make a "Spider Web" quilt as pictures or their stings can be assembled to form diamonds, rectangles, squares, ribbons or whatever we can dream up. Like I said, no two quilts are are alike.
There is no pattern fee for this class. There is a slide presentation to accompany this class. It works as either a 3 or 6 hour hands on class or can also be used as a one hour lecture with the slide show only.
Class or Lecture: "T-Shirt Quilts - Barb's Way" high school graduate to take to college for their dorm bed. Bring your T shirts, hat logos, sweatshirts, FHA jackets, etc that you would like to make into a quilt. I will help you get a good start on assembling them into a quick, fun, quilt without a lot of measuring. I have created a method of putting T-shirt quilts together that gets rid of all that math. There is no pattern fee for this class or lecture. This class or lecture includes a slide show. In the class the participants will actual start on their T shirt quilts. During a lecture I will explain my method for making T shirt quilts and everyone will be able to go home and start their quilts.
T-shirt quilts are a huge hit for kids and adults alike. They make the best gift for a

Class: “The Scrappy Pineapple”
This class may be three hours or preferably a six hour class. It also makes a fantastic two day workshop or a retreat weekend project.
Book is required for this class.
Class: “The Crazy Cabin”
The Crazy Cabin is my original technique design that really eats up those scraps. The final layout of a quilt can be any log cabin design. This class includes some very simple machine embroidery using the blanket stitch or other design stitches on your sewing machine. This has been a student favorite.
This class may be three hours or six hours. In six hours the participant will start assembling their quilt. In three hours they will be very comfortable with the technique and can go home and finish it. This class also makes a fantastic two day workshop or a retreat weekend project.
Class: “Celebration – with a Twist”
“Paulie’s Parrot” by Barbara Raisbeck
We start with the Celebration pattern from Quilt Moments and work on this medallion quilt from the inside out. Each student selects a “theme” fabric and we manipulate it, add lots of borders along the way, and presto, we all have a unique, beautiful quilt.
This quilt requires a six hour class. This class works great for a two day workshop and the top will be nearly finished before the end of the two days. It works wonderfully for a retreat weekend.
Pattern is required for this class.
Class: “Convergence Quilting Made Easy”
Ricky Tims accidentally discovered a quilt piecing process he calls converging. After making a number of these quilts I created an organizational method for piecing the quilt so it goes together quickly with less chance of error. The student will learn the basics of convergence quilting by making a Harmonic Convergence Wallhanging. Their mind will quickly fill with all kinds of “what ifs.” No one can make just one!
Convergence quilts for this class are made with one yard of my own hand dyed fabric. I bring a large selection of fabrics for the student to select from. Additional fabric is for sale.
This class is either a three or six hour class. Students will be well on their way in three hours and most will complete the center of an approximately 25 square inch wall hanging in six hours.
Kit fee is required for this class. It includes a one yard piece of Quilts by Barb hand dyed fabric and a pattern fee.
Class: “Marbled Table Topper”
This colorful table topper is quick, easy and matches everyone’s décor. We start with one yard of Quilts by Barb’s hand dyed fabric, cut, turn, twist and WOW! The colors explode into a one of a kind project that will have everyone asking, “Where did you get that?”
This class is a three hour class. Most participants will complete a 15” x 50” table runner.
Kit fee is required for this class. It includes one yard of Barb’s hand dyed fabric (student’s choice) and a pattern fee.
Class: “Stained Glass – It’s a Snap”
This is an original, easy table topper or wall hanging that uses Quilts by Barb’s hand dyed fabric. Each student will select their own piece of hand dyed fabric from Barb’s large selection. They will complete or nearly complete a small quilt approximately 30” X 38.” This class is easy enough for a beginner with little experience but fascinating enough for someone more advanced.
This class may be either a three hour or a six hour class. The technique can be learned in three hours and construction will be started. The small quilt will be completed or nearly completed in a six hour class.
Kit fee is required for this class. It includes one yard of Barb’s hand dyed fabric, one yard of a commercial black fabric and a pattern fee.
Lecture, Trunk Show or Keynote Address:
“It’s Handsome in Hand Dyed”
This is a trunk show of projects that I have made using my own hand dyed fabrics. I touch base on how I dye the fabrics. I bring a lot of my hand dyed fabric for participants to touch, play with and purchase.
Lecture, Trunk Show or Keynote Address:
“I Wish I’d Thought of That!”
A quilt that goes into a major quilt show is usually above and beyond the original pattern. I will show the participants some of my show quilts and go through my thought process when designing and making the quilts. I will also show how to make your quilt hang perfectly in the show or on your wall at home.
Lecture, Trunk Show or Keynote Address:
“Scrappy Makes My Happy”
Everyone has a pile of scraps. Scrap quilts are my favorite. This trunk show of SOME of my scrap quilts will give you many ideas. I will explain how to sort your fabrics to make a very successful scrap quilt. Why use three fabrics for your next quilt when you can use hundreds of different fabrics, many of which you already own!
Lecture: “Borders and Bindings”
Learn how to properly apply a border to a quilt. I will show you “Barb’s way” of applying a mitered border to a quilt and “Barb’s way” of making bias binding. I also cover the math on how to get those pieced borders to fit your quilt.
Lecture: “Starting a Quilting Group”
Lecture or Trunk Show:
"Don't be Afraid of the Mystery or the Challenge!"
New in 2013: I love a Mystery Quilt or a Challenge. Let me open your eyes into my thought process when I select fabrics for a mystery or what I do for a challenge. This presentation will give your guild ideas for your group to use in future challenges.
